Frequently Asked Questions
What is dog hydrotherapy and how does it help?
Dog hydrotherapy is a low-impact therapy using water to support recovery, fitness, and mobility. It reduces stress on joints while improving muscle strength, circulation, and flexibility. Commonly recommended for dogs with arthritis, post-surgery rehabilitation, or weight management, hydrotherapy can also benefit active dogs needing conditioning or injury prevention.
Do dogs need a veterinary referral for hydrotherapy?
In many cases, hydrotherapy centres require or recommend a referral from a veterinarian, especially if your dog has a medical condition or is recovering from surgery. This ensures the program is tailored to their health needs and helps therapists work alongside your vet to achieve the best outcome.
What happens during a typical hydrotherapy session?
A hydrotherapy session usually begins with a health check, followed by guided exercise in a heated pool or underwater treadmill. Sessions are monitored by a trained therapist who adjusts intensity based on the dog’s ability. Most dogs build strength gradually, and sessions are designed to be safe, controlled, and supportive.
